In collaboration with Southeastern School of Ballet, located in Columbia South Carolina, the Raven project was founded by dancer, choreographer and poet Jhe Russell. The Raven Project is named in honor of  legend and personal friend who has family roots in Charleston and Spartanburg South Carolina, first African American ballerina of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Ms. Raven Wilkinson. When Mr. Russell was a child he was told that he could not do classical ballet because of his race and yet he still went on to dance as a soloist with world class companies such as The National Ballet of Canada, Dance Theatre of Harlem and Bejart Ballet Lausanne. Mr. Russell bonded with Raven Wilkinson's story of over coming adversity while dancing in the 1950's and from this bond Mr. Russell was inspired to create the Raven Project. The Raven project is a dance and education movement that empowers people from all walks of life and celebrates the light that shines from within. The Raven Project  provides diverse entertainment while strengthening problem solving skills consisting of a dance workshop entitled "Angles in motion" and a story ballet for children entitled "Birds of light". "Birds of light", choreographed by Mr. Russell, is about a bird named Loom who represents Venus one of the brightest spheres in the universe. Loom comes into conflict with two other groups of birds the Ravens and the Doves who battle for Loom's light. All birds eventually realize that they are beings of light and that there is no need to fight. "Angles in motion", instructed by Mr. Russell, is inspired by the Ball in Ballet which is the shape of the circle and is formed by the unifying of the triangle and the square. Like geometry, human beings have different body shapes and "Angles in Motion" unifies these differences by celebrating all aspects of the Cirlce. Mr. Russell has held "Angles in motion" for Southeastern School of ballet, Transitions Homeless shelter and Prescott Manor community center in Columbia South Carolina. The "Birds of light" story ballet premiered at Columbia College in Cottingham Theater April 23rd 2016.
